VIP Ground · @Frank Miulli
Every winter, thousands of Chicago skiers come get a taste of the Rocky Mountains in Vail, Breck, & Beaver Creek. The flight is the easy part. The last leg, from the airport to your Resort, is where a ski trip justs get started with a drive through the snowy mountain pass.
We know this route personally. VIP Ground started in Chicago before moving to the Vail Valley, so we’ve seen this trip from both ends. Here’s how to plan it right.
Getting from Chicago to Vail: Your Three Options
The fastest route is a nonstop from O’Hare into Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), about 35 miles from Vail. United and American both fly ORD–EGE nonstop in the winter season, with flights starting in early December. The flight runs roughly 3 hours.
| Route | Travel time | Miles to Vail on arrival | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nonstop ORD → Eagle County (EGE) | ~3 hr flight | ~35 miles (about 40 min) | Shortest door-to-slope trip |
| ORD or MDW → Denver (DEN) | ~2.5 hr flight | ~120 miles (2–3+ hrs on I-70) | More flights, often lower fares |
| Drive from Chicago | ~15–16 hrs | — | Road-trippers with time and a winter-ready vehicle |
Denver offers the most flights at cheaper rates, but it adds a two-hour-plus mountain drive, and much more when snow hits. Eagle County costs a bit more in airfare and saves you that drive almost entirely. Private jet travelers land at EGE too, which handles a large share of Vail’s private aviation traffic.
The I-70 Reality Check
If you fly into Denver, the drive to Vail runs straight up I-70 through the Tunnel and over Vail Pass, both above 10,000 feet. Chicagoans know snow, but the Mountain can get Grizily.
A few things to know before you rent a car:
- Colorado’s Traction Law is in effect on I-70 from September 1 to May 31. Between Morrison and Dotsero, your vehicle needs 4WD/AWD, or tires with at least 3/16″ tread rated all-weather or mud-and-snow, or chains/traction devices on hand. (CDOT)
- Fines are real. Driving with inadequate equipment when the law is active can cost more than $130, and blocking the road can cost more than $650. (CDOT)
- Storms close the pass. Vail Pass and the tunnel approaches can shut down for hours during heavy snow, and weekend ski traffic can turn a two-hour drive into five.
- Rental cars aren’t always ready. Many rentals don’t come with 3 peak mountain rated tires, and you won’t always get the AWD you reserved.
Skip the Drive: Private Transportation with VIP Ground
The smartest way to finish a Chicago-to-Vail trip is to let a local professional drive. VIP Ground Transportation meets you at Eagle County, Denver International, or the private aviation terminal and takes you straight to your hotel, condo, or chalet.
- Built for ski groups. Our Sprinter vans seat up to 14 passengers, with room for skis, boards, and boot bags. No roof racks, no Tetris in a rental lot.
- Drivers who know the mountains. We run I-70 and Vail Pass every winter day. We watch road conditions, plan around closures, and drive vehicles equipped for Colorado’s traction rules.
- Flight tracking. If your flight from O’Hare is delayed, we adjust. You won’t land to an empty curb.
- Chicago roots. VIP Ground started in Chicago, and we still serve the Chicagoland Area. We understand how Midwest travelers plan, and we can coordinate both ends of your trip.
- Relax from the first mile. Start the vacation the moment you land: mountain views out the window instead of brake lights and chain-up areas.
Trip-Planning Tips for Chicago Skiers
- Book EGE flights early. Nonstops from O’Hare are seasonal and fill fast around Christmas, MLK weekend, and Presidents’ Day.
- Fly midweek if you can. Saturday arrivals mean crowded flights and heavy I-70 traffic out of Denver.
- Give your body a day. Vail Village sits at about 8,150 feet. Drink extra water and take it easy on night one.
- Ship or rent gear. Skipping oversized bags speeds up your exit from baggage claim. Vail has plenty of rental shops.
- Reserve ground transportation with your flights. Peak holiday dates book out, especially for groups needing a large van.
- Plan the return, too. Book your ride back to the airport with buffer for weather. Mountain storms don’t care about your flight time.
