The case for Eagle (EGE)

Time: EGE is roughly 30 to 35 miles from Vail and about 20 to 25 miles from Beaver Creek, so

most transfers take 35 minutes or less. Denver is just over two hours away in good

conditions.

Less weather exposure on the ground: You skip the I-70 mountain corridor, where

winter closures cause most transfer delays.

Smaller airport: Shorter walks, faster bag claim, quicker exits.

The case for Denver (DEN)

More flights and options: Denver is a  hub with far more airlines, direct flights, schedules, and

fares.

Often cheaper: Fares into Denver are lower, especially on short notice and during

peak holiday dates.

Better backup options: If your flight is canceled, Denver has more flight options

available.

The weather question

Eagle is a mountain airport.  Flights can occasionally be

delayed, canceled, or diverted when conditions are bad. Denver Airport does not have to deal with the takeoff and landing conditions that Eagle Regional has in the mountains, but the drive from Denver can then be the bottleneck. Either way, building a flexible schedule on arrival day is smart, and booking a driver who tracks your flight takes some of the stress from travel off of your plate.

Quick decision guide

If this describes you…     Consider

Short trip, every hour counts – EGE

Traveling with young kids – EGE

Flying private or fractional –  EGE

Lowest fare is the priority – DEN

Large group on different flights – DEN or mix

Want the most flight options – DEN

Mix and match

Some travelers fly into Denver for the better fare and out of Eagle for convenience. A private transfer can be booked one way or round trip, so this is easy to arrange.

Ground transportation at either airport

At EGE, rideshare access is limited, so pre-booking a private car is the most reliable way to

get to Vail or Beaver Creek. From Denver Airport private transportation saves you from shuttle delays or taking a rental car up the I-70 mountain corridor.
