Mexico City to Vail This Winter: How to Get from the Airport to the Slopes
Oct 20, 2026 · @Frank Miulli
For generations, families from Mexico City have made Vail their winter home away from home. Christmas and New Year’s in the Rockies, ski school for the kids, and Semana Santa on spring snow are traditions for thousands of travelers from Mexico every season. Vail’s ties to Mexico go back decades, and the town even keeps a representative in Mexico City.
But the trip from CDMX to the slopes still takes planning. There’s no direct flight, winter roads can be unpredictable, and large families with ski bags don’t fit in an Uber. Here’s how to make the journey easy, from the when you land to the moment you get to your Resort.
Your two routes: Denver or Eagle County
There are currently no nonstop flights from Mexico City (MEX) to Vail. You’ll choose between two options.
Option 1: Fly into Denver (DEN), then drive to Vail. Denver has daily nonstop flights from Mexico City and the most flight choices. The drive to Vail is about 120 miles on I-70 and typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, longer in snow or on a busy weekend. You’ll cross the Continental Divide through the Tunnel and go over Vail Pass, both of which can see winter closures.
Option 2: Connect to Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE). EGE is about 35 miles from Vail, roughly a 40-minute drive. You’ll connect through a U.S. hub such as Denver, Houston, or Dallas. This winter, United is increasing its Denver–Eagle service to six flights a day and making its Houston–Eagle route daily, which gives travelers from Mexico more options.
Which is better? If you want the most flight options and lower fares, Denver usually wins. If you want the shortest drive and the least time on mountain roads,, Eagle is worth the extra connection. Either way, VIP Ground has you covered.
Clearing customs and making your connection
When you fly from Mexico City, you’ll clear U.S. Customs at your first U.S. airport, whether that’s Denver, Houston, or Dallas. If you’re connecting on to Eagle, you’ll typically recheck your bags after customs. Build in a comfortable layover, at least two hours during holiday weeks, lines at international arrivals can be long in late December.
Tip: Share your full itinerary with your driver, including your connecting flight. VIP Ground tracks your flight in real time, so if a connection is missed or delayed, your pickup adjusts with you.
When Mexican travelers come to Vail
Two windows dominate:
- Christmas and New Year’s (mid-December to early January). Mexican school vacations line up with peak season in Vail. New Year’s week is the busiest arrival period of the entire winter at Eagle, and Saturdays are especially heavy. Book your transportation as soon as your flights are confirmed.
- Semana Santa (March 21–28, 2027). Holy Week is one of the most popular times for Mexican families to ski Vail. Spring conditions mean sunshine and long days on the mountain, but demand for vehicles is high, so reserve early.
Why a private transfer makes sense for families from Mexico
Shared shuttles work for solo skiers, but families and groups traveling from Mexico City usually have different needs:
- Space for everyone and everything. Our Sprinter vans seat up to 14 passengers with room for ski bags, boot bags, and holiday luggage. For larger groups, we can arrange additional vehicles or a limo-style Sprinter.
- No waiting after a long travel day. After an early departure from CDMX, customs, and a connection, the last thing you want is to wait for a shuttle with multiple stops. Your chauffeur is waiting when you land.
- Experienced winter drivers. Colorado’s traction law applies on I-70 through the winter, and conditions can change quickly. Our chauffeurs drive these mountain roads every day and know when to leave early and which conditions to watch.
- Door-to-door to your home or hotel. Whether you’re staying in Vail Village, Lionshead, Beaver Creek, Arrowhead, or your own residence in the valley, we take you right to the door.
- Grocery and ski-shop stops. Need to stop for groceries or pick up rentals on the way? Just tell us when you book.
Flying private? We meet you on the ramp.
Many of our clients from Mexico arrive by private Jet at Eagle County. VIP Ground regularly serves private aviation clients and coordinates directly with your flight department so your vehicle is ready when the aircraft arrives.
Planning checklist for your trip from Mexico City
- Check that your passport and U.S. visa are valid for your full travel dates.
- Decide on Denver or Eagle based on your group size, budget, and comfort with mountain driving.
- Leave at least two hours for customs on your connection during the holidays.
- Book your ground transportation as soon as flights are confirmed, especially for Christmas, New Year’s, and Semana Santa.
- Send your driver your full flight details, number of passengers, and number of ski bags.
- Pack warm layers in your carry-on; Vail sits at 8,150 feet and winter evenings are well below freezing.
