Why roads close in the Colorado mountains
The mountain corridor is known to get pretty grilly during the winter months. Most closures in our area come down to weather, terrain, or a crash, and they usually hit the same few stretches of highway.
- Vail Pass (I-70, between Vail and Copper Mountain): The most common closure point for Denver transfers. Heavy snow, spun-out trucks, and crashes can shut it in one or both directions.
- Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel and Loveland Pass: High elevation and heavy traffic mean storms and accidents back things up quickly between Summit County and Denver.
- Glenwood Canyon (I-70, west of Dotsero): Rockslides and debris flows can close the canyon, which matters for trips toward Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and western Colorado.
- Avalanche mitigation: Crews sometimes close roads briefly on purpose to bring down snow safely before it falls on its own.
- Traction and chain laws: These aren’t closures, but they slow everything down and can lead to closures when underequipped vehicles get stuck.
Most closures last minutes to a couple of hours. Some last longer. Knowing which kind you’re facing, and how fast, is where a professional driver earns their rate.
What VIP Ground does when a road closes
Our approach is simple: see it early, tell you right away, and choose the safest route that still gets you where you need to be.
- We check before we roll. Before every mountain transfer, our team reviews CDOT road conditions, weather, and traffic. If a storm or closure is building, we may suggest an earlier pickup so you have breathing room.
- We tell you what’s happening. If a closure hits mid-trip, your driver or our dispatch team will let you know what’s closed, what we expect, and what the options are. No guessing from the back seat.
- We reroute when it makes sense. Local drivers know the alternatives. For example, if Vail Pass closes, there’s a detour over Tennessee and Fremont Passes through Leadville that rejoins I-70 near Copper Mountain. It’s longer, but sometimes it’s faster than waiting.
- We wait safely when it doesn’t. Not every detour is a good idea. If the alternate route is also snowed in, or the closure is expected to clear soon, the smartest move is often to wait somewhere warm and safe rather than gamble on a mountain pass at night.
- We handle the logistics. If your timing changes, we’ll help you think through calling your airline, your FBO, or your hotel so nobody is left wondering where you are.
Our vehicles are prepared for Colorado winters and our drivers know these roads in every season. That’s the difference between a transfer company and someone who just owns a van.
What about my flight?
The airport you use changes how much a closure can affect you.
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is about 35 miles west of Vail, and the drive doesn’t cross Vail Pass or the tunnel. Closures on this route are less common, which is one reason many private aviation and repeat ski travelers prefer flying into Eagle.
Denver International Airport (DEN) is roughly two hours or more from Vail in good conditions, and the route crosses both Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel. For Denver departures in winter, we strongly recommend building in extra time, especially on storm days and busy weekend afternoons.
If you’re arriving and the road closes after you land, we track your flight and stay in contact. We’ll let you know whether to grab a meal at the airport, wait in the vehicle, or plan around a longer drive.
If you’re departing and a closure threatens your flight, we’ll tell you as early as possible so you can contact your airline or FBO. Private flights often have more flexibility on departure times, and commercial airlines may rebook you if weather is widespread. The earlier you know, the more options you have.
How to make a road closure less stressful
A few small steps on your end make a big difference:
- Book early and share your flight details. The more we know, the better we can plan around weather.
- Pad your departure time in winter. For Denver flights, leaving earlier than you think you need to is the best insurance there is.
- Keep your phone charged and nearby. If plans change, we’ll reach out by call or text.
- Pack a small carry-on comfort kit. Snacks, water, a charger, and any medications you might need if the drive runs long.
- Check COtrip.org or the COtrip app. It’s Colorado’s official source for road closures and conditions, and it helps you see what we’re seeing.
- Trust the call to wait. If your driver says it’s safer to hold, that decision is about getting you there in one piece.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be charged extra if a road closure makes my trip longer? No, we do not charge out clients for a situation that is out of their control. If there is a overnight closure during a transfer we drop our passengers at an overnight stay and the driver returns the next day. Our goal is always to be upfront about any changes before they happen, never after.
What if I miss my flight because of a closure? Road closures are outside anyone’s control, but we’ll do everything we can to get you there on time , keep you informed early so you can work with your airline or FBO, and can divert to a diffrent airport if needed.
Can you pick me up earlier if a storm is coming? Yes, when our schedule allows. If we see a storm in the forecast, we may reach out first to suggest it.
Do you drive in snowstorms? Yes. Our drivers are experienced in mountain winter driving. But safety comes first, and we won’t push through conditions that put passengers at risk.
Is Eagle County Airport a safer bet in winter? The drive from EGE to Vail and Beaver Creek avoids Vail Pass and the tunnel, so it tends to be shorter with less incidents.
