A private car from Denver International Airport (DEN) to Vail typically runs $550 to $750 one way for an SUV and $1,000 to $1,400 for a Sprinter van, based on published 2026 rates from Denver-area car services. That price is for the whole vehicle per transfer, not per person.
Where your trip lands in that price point depends on the vehicle, your group size, and your travel dates. Here’s how it breaks down, so you can budget before you book and compare quotes side by side.
Typical prices by vehicle (DEN to Vail, one way)
An SUV covers most couples and families; a Sprinter makes sense once you pass 6 passengers or bring a lot of gear.
| Vehicle | Seats | Typical winter price (per vehicle) | VIP Ground |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury SUV (Suburban, Escalade or similar) | Up to 6 | $550–$750 | [Frank: your SUV rate or “starting at”] |
| Sprinter van | Up to 14 | $1,200–$1,600 | [Frank: your Sprinter rate] |
| Limo-style Sprinter | Up to 15 | Quote-based | [Frank: your limo Sprinter rate] |
| Shared shuttle (for comparison) | 1 seat | $99–$169 per person | Not offered |
For reference, Blue Sky Limo lists $650–$725 for an SUV from DEN to Vail, Epic Mountain Express lists its Premier Black SUV at $629–$1,359 per vehicle, and a 14-passenger luxury van listing starts at $1,530. Shared shuttle fares are from Epic Mountain Express’s winter rates.
Flying into Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) instead? It’s only about 35 miles from Vail, so private rides cost far less. Epic Mountain Express lists $349–$489 for an SUV from EGE to Vail.
What affects the price
For the most part he vehicle and your dates move the price, everything else is smaller adjustments.
- Vehicle size. A Sprinter costs roughly twice an SUV but carries more than twice the people and gear.
- Season and holidays. Winter rates run higher than summer. Blue Sky Limo, for example, charges $595 in winter vs. $545 in summer for the same SUV. Christmas, New Year’s and Presidents’ Day weeks are the most expensive and the first to sell out.
- Which airport. DEN to Vail is about 120 miles over Vail Pass. EGE to Vail is about 35 miles, so it costs a fraction as much.
- Exact address. Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead sit a few miles past Vail and usually cost a little more.
- Time of day. Late-night and early-morning pickups can carry a surcharge with some companies.
- Wait time and stops. Extra waiting, a grocery run or a dinner stop on the way can add to the bill. One Vail-area listing charges $180 per hour for waiting time.
- Private jet arrivals. Pickups at FBOs can include a gate fee. Blue Sky Limo adds $100 for private jet arrivals.
What’s included, and what costs extra
Two quotes with the same headline price can end up $100 or more apart once gratuity and fees are added, so ask what’s in the number.
| Item | Often included | Sometimes extra |
|---|---|---|
| Driver gratuity | Some companies build in 15–20% | Many add it at checkout or leave it to you |
| Airport and fuel fees | Usually built in | Some list them separately |
| Flight tracking | Standard with most private services | — |
| Ski and luggage space | Standard in SUVs and Sprinters | Ski boxes or extra bags on some |
| Car seats | Available on request | Can carry a fee |
| Waiting past the grace period | — | Billed hourly |
| Stops on the way | — | Billed per stop or by time |

Private car vs. shuttle: the per-person math
For one or two travelers, a shared shuttle is cheaper. Once you hit four to six people, a private car costs about the same, and for big groups it’s often more affordable.
Shared shuttle seats to Vail run $99–$169 per person each way in winter. Here’s how that compares with booking the whole vehicle:
| Group size | Shared shuttle (total) | Private option (total) | Private cost per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people | $198–$338 | SUV: $550–$750 | $275–$375 |
| 4 people | $396–$676 | SUV: $550–$750 | $138–$188 |
| 6 people | $594–$1,014 | SUV: $550–$750 | $92–$125 |
| 12 people | $1,188–$2,028 | Sprinter: $1,200–$1,600 | $100–$133 |
A rental car can look cheaper on paper, but add winter tires or 4WD, gas, and resort parking that can be costly. You’re also driving I-70 and Vail Pass yourself after a flight with a vehicle not equipped with studded 3 peak mountain rated tires.
Rideshare fares to Vail swing with demand, and not every driver will take a 120-mile mountain trip. We covered that in Uber to Vail vs. Private Transportation
Is a private car worth it?
For groups, families and anyone landing in bad weather, usually yes. You’re paying for the vehicle to leave when you land, go straight to your door, and be driven by someone who handles I-70 every winter.
A shuttle runs on a schedule and stops at other hotels along the way. A private car waits if your flight is late, fits skis and car seats, and doesn’t make you wait at a transfer center. Shuttle companies note the DEN to Vail drive takes around 3 to 3.5 hours; with no other drop-offs, a private car is often faster.
There’s also a reason VIP Ground exists. Years ago, flying home to Vail from Chicago, our owner Frank Miulli landed at DEN in the fall and had a rideshare driver refuse the trip at the curb. It was late, with no shuttles left. He spent the night with family in Denver instead. That’s the night a private car is worth every dollar.
How to get the best price
- Book early for holiday weeks. Christmas through New Year’s and Presidents’ Day fill first, and late bookings cost more or find nothing left.
- Fill the vehicle. Splitting one SUV or Sprinter across your group is the biggest single saving.
- Book round trip. Ask whether a return trip lowers the rate. [Frank: confirm if VIP Ground discounts round trips.]
- Consider EGE. If your flight options work, landing at Eagle cuts the ground transfer to about 40 minutes and a fraction of the cost.
- Ask for the all-in price. Confirm gratuity, fees and wait time are in the quote, so you’re comparing like for like.
- Know the cancellation terms. Plans change in winter. Check how much notice you need for a refund.
