Thanksgiving in Vail 2026: What to Do and How to Get Here Stress-Free

There’s a reason more families trade the crowded restaurant for a mountain town Thanksgiving every November. Thanksgiving in Vail means first turns of the season in the morning, a feast you didn’t have to cook in the evening, and a village that starts glowing with holiday lights the moment the dishes are cleared.

But Thanksgiving week is also one of the busiest travel windows of the year. Flights are full, I-70 backs up, and securing a rideshare is rare once you’re past the Denver suburbs. This guide covers the best things to do in Vail over the holiday, where to eat, and how to plan your ride from the airport so the trip starts relaxed instead of pressed.

Key Dates for Thanksgiving Week 2026

Both Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek are scheduled to be spinning lifts before the turkey hits the table. Opening dates are targets and depend on snow and snowmaking, check the resort sites before you go. From the looks of it the gondolas will be rolling, as of today Nov 2nd theres already some snow on the mountain and it’s cold enough to start blowing snow !!!

Date What’s happening
Fri, Nov 13 Vail Mountain’s targeted Opening Day (Vail Daily)
Wed, Nov 25 Beaver Creek’s targeted Opening Day, with a celebration featuring cookies, giveaways and a DJ (Unofficial Networks)
Thu, Nov 26 Thanksgiving Day
Fri–Sun, Nov 27–29 Peak return-travel weekend; Sunday is typically the heaviest day for I-70 and DEN

With a Super El Niño forecast building excitement this fall, early-season conditions could be better than usual.

7 Things to Do in Vail Over Thanksgiving

1. Ski or ride on Thanksgiving morning

An early-season Thanksgiving ski day is a tradition for a lot of Vail Valley families. Terrain is limited this time of year, so go early, take a few laps together, and save your legs for dinner. Vail Health calls the chairlift some of the best family connection time of the holiday (Vail Health).

2. Catch Beaver Creek’s opening celebration

If you arrive by Wednesday, Beaver Creek’s Opening Day on Nov 25 is a fun way to kick off the trip, and the famous fresh-baked cookies are part of the deal.

3. Run a Turkey Trot

The valley usually hosts several Thanksgiving morning 5Ks, including the long-running YouthPower365 Turkey Trot in Eagle-Vail, which raises money for local kids. Confirm this year’s start time and location when registration opens.

4. Ride the gondola for the views

Not everyone in your group skis. A scenic gondola ride gets non-skiers and grandparents up high for snowy views and a hot chocolate at the top.

5. Go ice skating in the villages

Outdoor rinks in Vail Village, Lionshead and Beaver Creek make an easy afternoon activity for kids between meals.

6. Watch the holiday season light up

Beaver Creek traditionally holds a tree lighting celebration over Thanksgiving weekend with skating, Santa and fireworks. Check beavercreek.com for 2026 times.

7. Start a giving tradition

Many visitors volunteer or donate to local food programs during the week. It’s a meaningful way to give back to the community hosting your holiday.

Where to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner in Vail

You don’t have to cook to have a real Thanksgiving in the mountains. Most of the valley’s top restaurants and resorts serve holiday menus, and the best tables book out weeks ahead.

  • Resort feasts: Four Seasons Vail offers a Thanksgiving feast with a carving station and seasonal desserts, plus a to-go option (Four Seasons). Grand Hyatt Vail also runs holiday dining and a Thanksgiving To-Go package for guests in rental homes (RealVail).
  • Village restaurants: Vail Village, Lionshead, Beaver Creek and Edwards restaurants commonly offer prix-fixe or buffet Thanksgiving menus. Book through OpenTable or call directly.
  • Stay in: Order a to-go feast or hire a private chef and eat in your condo.

Pro tip: Book your car with your dinner reservation. Getting a ride from Lionshead to Beaver Creek at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving is harder than you’d expect. A private chauffeur means nobody draws the short straw as designated driver on a dark, icy mountain road.

Getting to Vail for Thanksgiving: DEN vs. EGE

Your two airport options are Denver International (DEN) and Eagle County Regional (EGE). Each has trade-offs over a holiday week.

  Denver (DEN) Eagle County (EGE)
Drive to Vail About 2 hours in good conditions; 3–4+ on busy holiday days About 35 minutes
Flights Most routes and nonstops; often cheaper Fewer flights, fills fast at Thanksgiving
Holiday risk I-70 traffic, chain laws, Eisenhower Tunnel delays Weather delays on smaller regional flights
Best for Larger groups, budget-conscious travelers Short trips, families with young kids

Why Thanksgiving week is tough on I-70

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are the heaviest traffic days on the holiday week. Early-season storms can trigger traction and chain laws, and most rental cars are not equipped with them or for the mountain being without snowrated tires. Shuttle schedules book up, and many rideshare drivers won’t take a two-hour mountain trip, especially late at night.

That last one is personal for us. Years ago, our founder flew into DEN on a fall evening, and the rideshare driver refused the trip to Vail right at the curb. No buses were left. He spent the night in Denver instead, and that frustration is part of why VIP Ground exists.

Private car service vs. shuttle

A shared shuttle stops for other passengers and runs on a fixed schedule. A private car or Sprinter van leaves when you land, waits if your flight is late, and takes you door to door. For families with ski bags, car seats and tired kids, that difference matters most on the busiest travel days of the year.

Thanksgiving in Vail: FAQ

Is Vail open for skiing on Thanksgiving 2026? Vail Mountain is targeting Nov 13 for Opening Day and Beaver Creek Nov 25, so both are expected to be open Thanksgiving Day, Nov 26. Early-season terrain is limited and depends on snow but its looking great !!

How long does it take to get from Denver airport to Vail at Thanksgiving? About 2 1/2 hours in clear conditions, but a good 3–4 hours or more on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after, especially with snow.

Should I fly into Eagle (EGE) or Denver (DEN) for Thanksgiving? EGE is about 35 minutes from Vail but has fewer flights that sell out early. DEN has more options but a longer, more weather-dependent drive.

Can I get an Uber from Denver airport to Vail? Sometimes, but many drivers decline long mountain trips, and availability drops late at night and during storms. A pre-booked car service is the reliable option over a holiday.

How early should I book transportation for Thanksgiving in Vail? As early as possible. Holiday week is one of the busiest of the year, and Sprinter vans for larger groups go first.

What is VIP Ground’s cancellation policy? Full refund when you cancel 48 or more hours before your trip, 50% refund for cancellations 24–48 hours out, and no refund under 24 hours.
